A Medi-Cal DUR educational alert titled “Drug Safety Communication: Adverse Effects from Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics” was published on the DUR: Educational Articles area of the Medi-Cal website on July 31, 2018. The article refers to the July 10, 2018 FDA announcement regarding strengthened warnings in the prescribing information for fluoroquinolone antibiotics.

A Medi-Cal DUR educational bulletin titled: “In the Pharmacy: Pharmacists Furnishing Nicotine Replacement Products” was published on March 30, 2018. The bulletin describes strategies to promote smoking cessation, including brief interventions (less than 10 minutes) by health care providers that are shown to be effective. The bulletin summarizes best practices for responsible prescribing of NRT products. A Pharmacologic Product Guide of all FDA-approved medications for smoking cessation is available from the University of California, San Francisco Rx for Change website.

A Medi-Cal DUR education alert titled: “Drug Safety Communication: New Age Limit for Opioid Cough and Cold Medicines was published on February 28, 2018. This alert is based on the announcement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on January 11, 2018, requiring labeling changes for prescription opioid cough and cold medicines to limit their use to adults 18 years and older.

A Medi-Cal DUR education alert titled: “Online Report to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS)” was published on September 29, 2017. VAERS is the national post-marketing safety monitoring system that accepts reports about adverse events that occur after administration of U.S. –licensed vaccines. A newer version, VAERS 2.0 online reporting system was implemented on June 30, 2017.
